There is no escaping we exist in many different spheres and places and online has become one of them. This learning playlist has been developed to offer some reflection and guidance when considering the rules, safety and etiquette online. The main aim is to raise awareness, and to support you in identifying ways in which you can protect yourself and others while online, and a starting point for participating safely and in being authentic. The main thing to remember is that there is no difference between engaging and sharing in real-time and face to face online. The same rules apply; be respectful, know what you are sharing, where you are sharing, who you are sharing with, the source of your influence and be you. Never do or say online what you would not do or say offline, and remember once it is there, it is always there.

Social media is a huge part of what we do online, but with so many different platforms out there with their own etiquette, knowing how to behave and what kinds of things to share in each can be a challenge. For example, you might not post something on LinkedIn that you shared on Instagram and vice versa. How we respond and engage with the people we know and the people we don’t on these social media channels seems to now be a part of our everyday life communication. This is your chance to consider some different platforms and reflect on how to act in each as well exploring and growing your understanding of cyberbullying and online hate crime.

The owner of this badge has completed the required 4 tasks for Social Communication that include:
  • Identifying where and when it is appropriate to use memes
  • Learned about what makes informative and useful video content on social media
  • Reflected on whether sharing less on social media can have benefits
  • Researched and developed a greater understanding of Cyberbullying and Online Hate Crime
  • Reflected on their own social media behaviour and how that might change in personal and professional contexts

The holder of this badge has worked independently to research and share their findings. The evidence provided for each task shows how the holder worked on these topics.

Memes have been around the internet for a long time - and they can be a fun way to communicate ideas - but they’re more at home on some platforms than others. Find an example of a meme that you’ve seen and share it here, plus explain where you would and wouldn’t use it and why.

  • TikTok and Instagram Reels are a great place to find fun and engaging videos - but, as well as being perfect for entertainment, they can also inform. Find an example of an informative TikTok or Reel and share it here, plus explain why you think the post you’ve chosen is useful and what you learnt from it.
  • Social media encourages us to be ‘always on’ and sharing all the time, but some platforms are experimenting with a different approach. Register for BeReal and try it out and see whether it encourages you to use social media less - what did you discover and were there any benefits to sharing less?
