Why bother going international? Assessing young people's needs

Content

When preparing an international youth programme where young people are actively involved in all stages, it is essential to focus on needs and expectations from the very beginning. Exploring needs, interests and expectations will lead you to understanding WHY bother going international.

The following set of questions will guide you through exploring good reasons and needs for developing an international youth programme:
  • What is needed from or wished for by the young people who will be engaged in the programme?
  • How much going international is wanted by the community and young people?
  • Why should everybody be interested in it?
  • What do you as a youth worker want to achieve?
  • What should be the impact or result of the programme if it is successful?
  • How would the situation have changed?
  • How much of a priority does it represent for your organisation?
  • How will international youth programmes achieve something different from what is already being done?

We recommend carrying out the following practical activities that will enable you to gather the needs and ideas of your young people and relate them to your organisation’s priorities.

Step 1. Use creative ways and methods to spark a conversation with young people about their ideas, interests, and reasons to go international. Download Worksheet 1 for an activity with young people.

Step 2. Set up a meeting with your team in the organisation to explore the benefits of developing international youth programmes. Download Worksheet 2 to map benefits for your organisation.

Finally, conclude needs analysis for international youth programmes by making a summary of all inputs. Upload results to get a badge for completing this activity.
