Before you start with this learning playlist it is worth it to complete the Personal pathway to leadership Learning Playlist. Preceding playlist mostly focuses on the “I” in becoming an effective leader - your personal pathway to become a leader.

Before making an effective influence, in a team, in a group of people, or in your City of Learning you need to have a foundation of independence, for example knowing what your paradigms and principles are, being aware of the road you want to travel and what your personal destination is. The personal pathway is something that you can keep developing and work on through your whole life. It will grow your self-esteem, self knowledge and give you a foundation to cope and manage when more difficult times arise. The place where to start building any relationship is within yourself.

Ok, then now the step into the Relationship with others Leadership Pathway

What can you expect in this Learning Playlist? The content is based on habit 4, 5, 6, and 7 of Stephen Covey’s book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ and has been specifically created for young people who are joining the Cities of Learning Network and taking part in the Youth Pathways to Leadership course Volume 2.

Do you want to develop further in recognising what is needed for you to be a team player or role model for your peers? Understanding what you personally need to do to achieve what you want for your community, then let's start. We can do it! We can cooperate! We can combine our talents and create something greater together!

Activities in this learning playlist are
  • Relational Deposit: which is all about investing in your relationships
  • Think Win-Win - A win-Win situation or result is one that is good for anybody involved.
  • Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood - This is when you empathically understand someone else before seeking to be understood in human relationships.
  • Synergy - a Synergy is when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
  • Renewal - to become new or refreshed and strong again

These above competences are related to learning to live and work together and it supports awareness of different needs of people. You can work on the ability and willingness to interact, communicate and collaborate with others in a constructive way. A lot of emerging jobs which are expected to become available in the nearby future will require having experience with these skills.

Participants of these activities can earn badges that belong to Global Youth Skills competence framework from Institute for the Future, specifically the skills zones:
  • Make yourself known,
  • Befriend the machines,

What is synergy
Synergy in a group of people exists when the sum of the separate qualitaties and talents are combined together more than the sum of their sepperate effects → 1 + 1 is at least bigger than 3.

Steps to create synergy
  1. ASK: Are all parties in the situation willing to go for a solution that is better than any of us has come up with yet?
  2. DEFINE together the criteria of success
  3. CREATE one or many 3rd alternatives for the situation
  4. ARRIVE at synergy or a 3rd alternative

Synergy

Tips to create synergy in a group
* A sensitive introduction, in which everyone got to know each other well and could also react emotionally to each other. That requires listening, looking, feeling, accepting, connecting. Get to know more about each other. The better you know the other person, the less inclined you are to judge.
* Empathy for each other. When you're connecting with others, you sometimes have to get out of your comfort zone. Every person has some barriers to overcome.
* Do not form judgments. All ideas, intuition and feelings, may be there. Everything has value and everyone is entitled to have their own story.
* Letting go. Choose the bigger picture. Sometimes your idea doesn't find a breeding ground, or it doesn't work for the higher purpose. That doesn't mean it's a bad idea, just this time it won't get you closer to the goal. Letting go of the idea and moving on to other perspectives that prove more fruitful for the purpose is than necessary. It's also called Kill your darlings. Cherish those ideas and keep them. They will prove fruitful at another time or for another purpose. It is often not important who comes up with which idea, or who has taken the first step towards an interpretation of something. Because we work together, everything that bubbles up or becomes visible in the group is the outcome of the collaboration. Everything comes from the inspiration we give each other.
* Dare to learn. Dare to fail. Nobody is perfect and it is a strength to dare to learn. Someone who makes a mistake and does something which makes no sense, wakes up the whole group. This moment can become a very consciously lived moment in a group.
* Stacking. Complement each other, be inspired by the other. That sets in motion a flow that is so powerful that it creates interpretations that you never expected. That makes one + one equals (or even be more than) three.
* Euphoria. When a group's task is over, everyone feels excitement, euphoria, a sense of great togetherness and happiness. It worked. Beforehand perhaps the group had no idea what would come out of it, and went completely open in the process. That gives satisfaction.
* Applause. Applaud a team for their synergistic collaboration. That encourages you to continue. That indicates that you are successful and have done your job exceedingly well.
