Volunteering:

verb; to offer to do something that you do not have to do, often without having been asked to do it and/or without expecting payment

This is the definition you can read in the Cambridge Dictionary. But what exactly are we talking about when referring to a volunteering experience in this playlist?

The European Solidarity Corps

In this activity we want to introduce you to the European Solidarity Corps Program, launched by the European Commission.

What is it? Shortly said, an ESK is an unpaid, full time volunteering service. The Youth for Europe describes it like this:
The European Solidarity Corps are meant to take action where it’s needed, in case of a crisis. Natural disasters, climate crisis, migrant emergencies or simply care of the disadvantaged ones – like people with disabilities, poor people or youngsters with fewer opportunities.

How long? They can last from 2 weeks up to 12 months. They can be done
  • individually (usually long term between 2 to 12 months) or
  • in a team (usually 2 weeks to 2 months.
In total, you can participate for 12 months maximum, for example a 12 month long term service, or another example a 2 month short term and afterwards a 10 month long term service.
Where? Most projects are in a country part of the European Union, but occasionally outside of the EU.
Who? The program is dedicated to young Europeans between the age of 18 and 30.
Expenses: The program is funded by the European Union. Travel, food and accommodation are provided, plus a monthly pocket money.
