Easter Island is yet another place on our blue planet steeped in mysticism. You probably saw videos or pictures with legendary head sculptures (Moai), sacred family caves and incredible stone works. But do you know why it’s called Easter Island?

Unfortunately, the origin of the name “Easter Island” is not mystical at all. The name "Easter Island" was given by the island's first recorded European visitor, the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen, who encountered it on Easter Sunday (5 April), 1722, while searching for "Davis Land". Roggeveen named it Paasch-Eyland (18th-century Dutch for "Easter Island").The island's official Spanish name, Isla de Pascua, also means "Easter Island".
